Mine Topsoil Program

This project involves reclaiming around 750 acres and managing over 1.3 million yards of topsoil using specialized equipment. Adhering to permit regulations is crucial, as violations can halt the entire mine’s operation. JHL’s main roles on-site are striping and spreading topsoil. Topsoil striping involves removing and stockpiling nutrient-rich soil to minimize costs and preserve limited on-site resources. Afterward, coal seams are exposed for extraction using high-wall mining machines. Once the coal is removed, JHL shapes the subgrade, spreads the stockpiled topsoil, and facilitates reseeding and stabilization. With proper reclamation, the area can be restored to a state where its past mining activity is not readily apparent.
